The Oxford Dictionary defines accreditation as "official approval given by an organization stating that someone or something has achieved a required standard ."
Accreditation is a continuous quality improvement process where peers apply internationally-recognized standards to an organization’s programs/services through a consultative on-site
survey to address stakeholder needs around accountability in efficiency, results or outcomes of
services, and satisfaction with services and the organization.
Accreditation
Accreditation is an assessment by an external organization to determine if processes and procedures by the service provider are being directed to produce positive outcomes in the lives of persons-served. Accreditation can be voluntary or mandated. Organizations, agencies, or programs can be accredited.
Licensure
Licensure is typically a state mandated process designed to ensure public safety and protect consumers. Individuals, facilities, programs, organizations, and agencies can be licensed.
Certification
Certification is the process on ensuring an individual or program has met certain requirements to provide services. Typically, certification is voluntary and conducted by a professional organization. Regulatory bodies may require certification to deliver a specific service.
The value of accreditation cannot be understated. Accreditation demonstrates an organization's ongoing commitment to persons-served, staff, stakeholders, and to the continuous process of quality improvement. Accreditation enhances organizational transparency and accountability to stakeholders. Accreditation supports innovation, empowerment, and productivity while prompting data-driven decision making. Accreditation is evidence that your organization strives to improve efficiency, fiscal health, and service delivery-creating a foundation for continuous quality improvement and consumer satisfaction.
Consider the following when choosing an accrediting body:
Mission, Vision, and Values
Evaluate which accrediting body best aligns with your organizational philosophy. Consider your why. What service(s) are you delivering?
Payors
Conduct your research. Who are your payors? What do they require for reimbursement? Does your state Medicaid require accreditation?
Standards
Conduct a comprehensive standards review. Compare the various standards. Which standards best align with your current operations?
Costs
Conduct a cost analysis. Is there an application fee? What is the total cost? Is travel included? Is there an annual or ongoing fee? What is the length of the accreditation?
No, an organization may become accredited without use of a consultant; however, there is value in using a consultant. Consultants provide expertise in standards and guidance around areas where organizations may lack experience. In today's workforce, organizations may not have the capacity or financial resources to take on an accreditation project without assistance. A consultant can help speed up the accreditation process through quick transfer of knowledge. Consultants typically have an array of resources or toolkits available for quick access, including templates, education and training curriculum, and relevant policies and procedures. Consultants, especially those who are current or former surveyors, are well versed in the accreditation process and understand organizational barriers to success and nuances surrounding the accreditation process.
