Professional Biography
Susan grew up on the beautiful Eastern Shore of Virginia. As a child, she recognized that she wanted to be a voice for other children. In 2002, Susan graduated from Old Dominion University with a BS in Human Services Counseling. Susan spent the first three years of her career as a foster care social worker at the Northampton County Department of Social Services. She pursued other roles in the human services sector including as a probation officer while simultaneously providing direct services to at-risk children/families.
In 2008, Susan obtained her MA in Human Services Counseling from Liberty University. In 2010, she joined Therapeutic Interventions as the Director of Performance Improvement/Compliance. In this capacity, she was responsible for ensuring company compliance with regulatory and licensing entities while facilitating and managing performance improvement initiatives. During her tenure at TI, Susan discovered one of her most meaningful work roles, leading the organization's pro-bono program on Tangier Island, an historical and unique Virginia treasure. Susan provided individual and group therapy to students of Tangier Combined School.
With TI, Susan led the accreditation team through the organization's first and subsequent accreditations, resulting in two three-year accreditations, with the last being a perfect survey, a designation achieved by only 3% of organizations. During this time, Susan came to recognize the inherent value of CARF accreditation. This led to the formation of SMJ Associates, a consulting firm specializing in CARF accreditation.
In 2021, Susan became an ASAM Level of Care Certification surveyor for CARF. Susan has conducted over fifty ASAM LOC certification surveys, achieving a 5 out of 5 on all surveyor satisfaction surveys. Susan recently graduated from Arizona State University's Doctor of Behavioral Health program. Susan is Certified in Healthcare Compliance (CHC).

The mission of Casa de los Niños is to promote child well-being and family stability in our community. For over 49 years, Casa de los Ninos has served the Tucson community to prevent child abuse and neglect and to support and empower families. We deliver a continuum of evidence-based services to effectively address the needs of children and families within our community.
Having provided services to children and families for nearly twenty years, I know firsthand the positive impact of prevention, intervention, and treatment services for children and families. As a former social worker and therapist, the mission of Casa de los Niños is near to my heart. I am proud of Casa’s 50-year legacy of providing transformative services to children and families in Tucson and Southern Arizona. I am honored to serve the community as a board member at Casa de Los Niños.
